Dr. Heo Chong Chin, Assistant Secretary for the Malaysian Society of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine (MSPTM), was honoured with the prestigious John Henry Comstock Graduate Student Award during the Annual Meeting of the Entomological Society of America (ESA) in Denver, Colorado on 7 Nov 2017. These awards were given to one graduate student from each ESA Branch to promote interest in entomology at the graduate level and to stimulate interest in attending the ESA Annual Meeting.
Dr. Heo obtained his Bachelor in Biomedical Sciences (Hons.) and Master in Medical Science (Parasitology) from the National University of Malaysia. He then earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Entomology, Texas A&M University in 2016. He is currently a faculty member at the Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Malaysia. Additionally, Chong Chin is a Board-Certified Entomologist (BCE) from the Entomological Society of America. Dr. Heo also received the Perdana Scholar Award from the Malaysian Embassy at Washington DC (2016); the Vice President Award for Research Excellent from Texas A&M University (2015); and a scholarship from Medical, Urban, and Veterinary Entomology section, Entomological Society of America during the 2015 ESA Annual Meeting at Minneapolis, Minnesota.
The Comstock award is named after an eminent American entomologist, John Henry Comstock (1849-1931), from Cornell University. He worked on insect morphology and is best known as the co-proposer of the Comstock-Needham system. Dr. Comstock had a significant influence in the development of entomology departments throughout the United States. The Entomological Society of America gives out an award in each of its six branches to the outstanding graduate student each year.
