The Malaysian Society of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine (MSPTM) and Universiti Islam Antarabangsa Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah (UniSHAMS) organised a Health Awareness Programme from 27 February to 1 March 2025 at Kampung Lubuk Legong, Baling. The event aimed to promote health awareness and provide essential health services to the local community. It was held in collaboration with Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM).

The objectives of the event included to raise awareness about common health issues and preventive measures, provide free health screenings and consultations and educate the community on hygiene practices and healthy living.
The activities conducted within the three days programme were categorised into three main themes. Firstly, health screenings and consultations whereby free health check-ups, including blood pressure, body mass index and blood sugar test were conducted. In addition, children participated in hygiene workshops focusing on proper handwashing techniques and oral health. Secondly, during the interactive sessions, children engaged in fun learning activities such as games and quizzes to make health education enjoyable. Lastly, many communities attended the expert talks by Dr. Lee Ii Li on gut health and nutrition. Dr. Farah Haziqah conducted a session on personal hygiene, while Dr. Intan Haslina Ishak shared insights on environmental health.

The programme was supported by 32 dedicated volunteers (25 MBBS students from UniSHAMS, 6 undergraduate and 1 postgraduate students from USM). These volunteers were instrumental in conducting house-to-house visits to distribute faecal sampling cups and inviting the community to participate in the awareness programme. Their contributions were key to ensuring the event’s success.

The programme successfully reached over 100 participants, including children, parents, and local leaders. The combination of educational activities and health services made a lasting impact on the community, showcasing the strength of partnerships between academia and local organization.

The MSPTM Health Awareness Programme at Kampung Lubuk Legong, Baling, was a resounding success. It not only raised health awareness but also provided valuable health services to the community. Inspiring Young Minds: MSPTM and FMHS UNIMAS Bring Science and Health Awareness to Rural Sarawak

The Malaysian Society of Parasitology & Tropical Medicine (MSPTM), in collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS), Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), successfully conducted the MSPTM Community Awareness Programme 2024 at SK St. Bernard Sadir, Padawan on 13th December 2024. With the theme “Health Awareness and Science Education for School Children in Sarawak,” the programme aimed to provide essential health education and services to the rural indigenous community, fostering awareness on hygiene, disease prevention, and scientific literacy. The initiative was led by MSPTM in partnership with experts from FMHS UNIMAS, reflecting a strong commitment to public health outreach and community engagement.

Strengthening Community Partnerships

The programme received strong support from local community leaders, including representatives from Kampung Sadir, Kampung Sibuti, Kampung Sibakar, Kampung Sibuang, and Kampung Annah Rais, as well as the Penghulu and Pemanca of the Bidayuh communities in Kuching District. Representing Sarawak’s Deputy Minister for Transport I, YB Datuk Dr Jerip anak Susil, was Mr Julius Scott anak Sapong, Padawan Sub-District Officer, who emphasised the importance of empowering rural communities through health awareness and science education.

Engaging Activities for All Ages

The programme featured a variety of interactive activities designed for both school children and adults, ensuring an inclusive and meaningful experience.

For School Children

Through Hands-on Science Exploration, students observed real specimens of parasites and microorganisms, providing them with a fascinating introduction to biological and health sciences. These activities were primarily conducted by MSPTM members based in Sarawak, who applied their expertise in parasitology, microbiology, and tropical medicine to make the sessions engaging and relevant. Additionally, students were also taught on the importance of proper handwashing techniques, reinforcing good hygiene habits to prevent infections.

Another key session was Probiotics and Gut Health Awareness, led by microbiologist Dr Anna Andrew from UNIMAS, where students learned about the role of probiotics in digestion and immunity. To reinforce the lesson, they received nutritional probiotic drinks sponsored by Yakult, Innoniaga, and The Zoticus Company. To make learning even more enjoyable, the programme included educational games, where quizzes, interactive and fun activities helped simplify scientific concepts and reinforce key health messages.

For Adults

This programme also catered to the healthcare needs of adults by providing free health screenings and consultations, conducted by FMHS UNIMAS medical professionals. Community members had access to general health check-ups, women’s health screenings, and mental health consultations. These services played a crucial role in promoting early detection and preventive healthcare, ensuring that individuals could take proactive steps in managing their well-being.

Positive Community Impact

This programme successfully reached over 100 participants, including students, parents, and community members. The collaboration between MSPTM, FMHS UNIMAS, and Padawan Sub-district Office played a crucial role in creating an engaging and educational experience, ensuring sustained impact through knowledge-sharing and health promotion.

Through collaborations with various agencies, the society aims to expand outreach efforts to more rural areas, ensuring access to quality health education and fostering interest in science among young learners.
