MSPTM supported activity – 3rd Intervarsity Parasitology Quiz and Oratorical Competition 2019

The 3rd Intervarsity Parasitology Quiz and Oratorical Competition was organized by the Department of Parasitology, University of Malaya on 27th August 2019 at T. J. Danaraj Auditorium, Faculty of Medicine, University of Malaya. This event is solely sponsored by the Malaysian Society of Parasitology and Tropical Medicine (MSPTM). The quiz was participated by students from seven universities in Malaysia, including UM, UiTM, UNISHAMS, UCSI, MAHSA, MSU as well as UNIMAS, who have traveled all the way from Sarawak.

The event was officiated by the Head of Department, Prof. Dr. Lau Yee Ling together with the President of MSPTM, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Siti Nursheena binti Mohd Zain and the council members. The quiz was an interesting three-level competition, including rapid questions with buzzer rounds and pictorial clues. The quiz was smoothly coordinated by the quizmasters with the assists of a panel of judges comprising of lecturers from different universities.

Four teams, UM, UCSI, UNISHAMS and UiTM, made it to the grand finals. In the grand finals, despite a tough fight between UM and UCSI, the UM team overtook UCSI by a few points in the last few questions, and cheered for winning the grand final of the quiz.

In the oratorical competition, participants spoke on the importance of parasitology in today’s context in three minutes. The participating representative from each university eloquently delivered their ideas and justifications. These contestants were evaluated by a panel of judges based on the content, language, clarity and confidence. The participant from UCSI was announced as the winner.

The event came to an end with a closing remark from the Dean of Faculty of Medicine, Prof. Dato’ Dr. Adeeba Kamarulzaman. The dean delivered her appreciation to the talented and hardworking organizing committee for running such a professional competition and stressed that the quiz should now go beyond to invite international universities to turn it into an international event. The event ended with a photo session and bidding of farewell.

Entomology and Justice: What else Can Flies Tell about Death

The Event

The Mid-Year Seminar has been successfully conducted on 26th July 2019 at Auditorium 1, Faculty of Medicine, Universiti Teknologi MARA, Sungai Buloh.

Organizer

The mid-year seminar was co-organized by Institute of Pathology, Laboratory and Forensic Medicine (I-PPerForM), Universiti Teknologi MARA with the theme “Entomology and Justice: What else Can Flies Tell about Death”

Participants

A total of 196 participants attended the seminar, including participants from Indonesia, Thailand and India. This interesting seminar attracted various groups of participants including MSPTM members, entomologists, forensic scientists, police officers, forensic pathologists, medical officers, forensic science undergraduate, postgraduate students, and others.

Speakers

The seminar consisted of five key talks related to the overview of forensic entomology in Malaysia, forensic cases, and research on forensic flies from morphology to genomics. Speakers for this seminar were Dr Nazni Wasi Ahmad, Supt. Vignesvaran s/o Velauthan, Dr. Christine Picard, Prof. Dr. Kabkaew Sukontason, and Dr Charity Owings. The plenary talks were followed by a forum moderated by Dr. Heo Chong Chin, and by research linkage meeting and presentation.
